Franchise Feature: The Vehicles

Mar 1, 2021

Even when at peak physical form, sometimes Lara needs a quicker way to get around. As evidenced by her past adventures, Lara must be licensed to drive an impressive array of vehicles.

From the first glimpse of Croft Manor in 1996, Lara’s affinity for motorbikes was apparent. It wasn’t until Tomb Raider II that fans got their hands on the first playable vehicle, requiring them to navigate the tight canals of Venice by boat. Lara also sped about the Tibetan foothills by way of snowmobile, and proved knowledgeable in aviation when she piloted Bartoli’s seaplane without batting an eye. The formula proved successful, with an assortment of vehicles breaking up foot travel in subsequent games, including quad bikes, kayaks, and even mine carts. In Tomb Raider: Legend, two branded Ducati bikes were featured in-game.

For the reboot in 2013, vehicles weren’t included in favor of focusing on establishing Lara’s new traversal skills. A fast-travel system allowed her to travel around the island “on foot,” however.

Branded vehicles were quite popular in the Hollywood adaptations, with an Aston Martin, Land-Rover, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and more making on-screen appearances. The Jeep deal even resulted in a pair of co-branded Jeep Hot Wheels.

Vehicles have proven one of the most popular aspects of Lara Croft: Relic Run, with the inclusion of the quad bike, motorbike, and snowmobile adding variety to Lara’s lengthy runs.

Take a look at Lara’s favorite modes of transport below.

  • Norton Streetfighter:

Lara’s first motorbike, her Streetfighter was featured in-game, although only in FMV sequences. It sank to the bottom of the ocean towards the end of

    Tomb Raider

, but Lara must have had an affinity for that specific bike. She was pictured in

    Tomb Raider II

promotional materials riding an exact replica.

  • The Full Lineup:

Norton Streetfighter (FMV Only), Natla’s Yacht (FMV Only)

  • Motorboat:

A narrow wooden boat used to navigate through the canals of Venice, the vehicle met its end when Lara used it to detonate water mines keeping her from Bartoli’s Hideout.

  • The Full Lineup:

Motorboat (Venice), Snowmobile (Tibet), Bartoli’s Seaplane (FMV Only), Jeep (FMV Only)

  • Quad Bike:

A fan favorite, Lara could drive the quad bike around the hedge maze at her manor, out in the wilds of India, and in Area 51.

  • Underwater Propulsion Unit:

An optional vehicle decidedly difficult to control, it made underwater exploration in London much quicker.

  • The Full Lineup:

Underwater Propulsion Unit, Quad Bike, Kayak, Inflatable Boat, Mine Cart

  • Motorbike with Sidecar:

This was the very first time Lara got to drive a motorbike in-game. After collecting the Nitrous Oxide Canister and Valve Pipe, Lara could create a Nitrous Oxide Feeder that boosted the bike and let it bridge wider gaps.

  • The Full Lineup:

    Motorbike and Sidecar, Jeep

  • Extreme Depth Suit:

Used to explore the bottom of the Barents Sea, Lara didn’t need to worry about her airflow while in the suit. She did, however, have to look out for nearby mechanical divers who fired grenades at her, using Chaff Flares as decoys to avoid damage.

  • The Full Lineup:

Pizza Delivery Moped (FMV Only), Extreme Depth Suit, Hang glider (FMV Only)

  • Lara hoofed it in

    Angel of Darkness

, with travel Lara only briefly being shown exiting a car as she arrives in Prague.

  • Ducati Monster Motorbike:

Lara stole the Monster in Peru, using it in an extended chase sequence to catch up to her friend Anaya and the mercenaries hot on her tail. All the while she had to avoid obstacles, gunfire, and explosives.

  • The Full Lineup:

Ducati Monster Motorbike, Ducati Superbike 999, Forklift

  • Natla’s Yacht:

As was true with the original

    Tomb Raider,

the ending cutscene showed Lara commandeer Natla’s yacht and drive off into the sunset as the pyramid of Atlantis imploded behind her.

  • The Full Lineup:

Norton Streetfighter (Cutscene Only), Mine cart (FMV Only), Natla’s Yacht (Cutscene Only)

  • Motorbike:

Lara’s unbranded bike in Underworld was a beast of a vehicle, with wide tires for traversal in rain, snow, and everything in-between. Lara used her trusty bike in Southern Mexico and on Jan Mayen Island.

  • The Full Lineup:

    Motorbike, Yacht

While Lara Croft started her first adventure on board the Endurance, she doesn’t take the helm of any vehicles in the reboot trilogy. To be fair, she didn’t have the best track record with vehicles after a shipwreck, car crash, and plane crash – so it’s probably for the better that Lara kept on foot?
