Inside The Legend of Lara Croft Wardrobe with Tasha Huo’s Favorite Picks

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft brings plenty of nostalgia for longtime fans, especially when it comes to Lara’s wardrobe. The series features a mix of iconic outfits from past Tomb Raider games along with some fresh new designs that fit right into her world of adventure.
We caught up with executive producer and writer Tasha Huo to chat about her favorite looks from the show, the creative process behind them, and the inspirations that brought them to life.
Tasha: This is inspired by Lara’s Shadowrunner outfit from Rise of the Tomb Raider. I’ve always loved seeing Lara in tactical gear. It’s such an outward expression of part of who she is and I really love seeing Lara in gear that makes her seem capable and armored. She can keep up with the world’s best Navy Seal, and in this outfit, she actually looks it. And I love, in our show, how confident she looks in this outfit. You don’t question she belongs in it.
Tasha: We spent a lot of time on this outfit. I had something very specific in my head, and we kept having to reiterate and peel away ideas until we got to the very bespoke, layered gala outfit that is now in the pilot. This gown was important to me because it was the first time in our show where we see her out of her smelly, dirty adventure gear, and embracing her femininity, which is also a big part of who Lara Croft is. That being said, as we know from the games, Lara doesn’t allow her dresses to be average or boring. This gown had to take chances, the way she does. So having these asymmetrical pieces and bright (non-boring) colors all just seemed right.
Tasha: This outfit was inspired by the Infiltrator and Commando outfits from Rise of the Tomb Raider. It’s not quite as paramilitary as the Shadowrunner outfit, but felt like something Lara would wear to infiltrate a foreign country for a mission that she intends, at least, to be stealthy and planned. Of course, it all blows up (quite literally). Her goggles were also a nod to the cool red-lensed circle shades we see from the games.
Tasha: This over-the-top tourist outfit comes, of course, from the scene she’s in. She’s trying to blend in while doing surveillance. But also, we never really get to see Lara in everyday human outfits, doing everyday human things in the games, and this was a chance to have a little fun and see what Tourist Lara might look like. The games have a lot of understated comedy in it, and this was a drop in the bucket of that legacy.
Tasha: This outfit is, obviously, a nod to one of Lara’s outfits in Tomb Raider: Legend. I love Lara’s shorts look and always will, but there’s something unrealistic to me about an adventurer as hardcore as Lara Croft, going knowingly out into the dangerous world and not protecting her body. But, in the opening to the pilot, we’re meeting Lara before she is the tomb raiding Lara Croft we know later. She’s still in college and this is one of her first adventures, so she’s still a bit naive and inexperienced.
Here’s a preview of what the next season has in store:
When adventurer Lara Croft discovers a trail of stolen African Orisha masks, she joins forces with her best friend Sam to retrieve the precious artifacts. Lara's thrilling new adventure takes her around the globe as she delves deeper into the hidden secrets of Orisha history, dodges the machinations of a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself, while discovering these relics contain dark secrets and a power that defies logic. Power that may, in fact, be divine.
