Everything you Need to Know about Tomb Raider I-III Remastered
Feb 8, 2024
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered comes to PC & consoles on February 14 – that's less than a week away! What do you need to know to be prepared?
The Remasters are developed & published by Aspyr.
Aspyr has history with Lara Croft - they were even founded the same year that Core Design introduced Tomb Raider (1996) to the world. Aspyr first collaborated with the franchise by launching Tomb Raider II (1997) on Macintosh computers. They continued to work with the legendary adventurer all the way through Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003). Aspyr knows what makes the franchise fun, and how to introduce the groundbreaking games developed by Core Design to an entirely new generation through remastered classics.
Aspyr focused on three key areas.
In Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Aspyr set out to balance preservation and modernization in updating the original trilogy, ensuring they honored the franchise foundations while making it accessible to modern audiences. They focused on three key buckets: engineering, gameplay, and art.
Engineering: To ensure an authentic experience and preserve gaming history, Aspyr kept Core Design’s original source code and engine, which was groundbreaking technology in the mid-90s and changed the game industry forever.
Gameplay: In using the original source code and engine, the classic strategies, puzzles, and secrets remain intact. The goal was to find ways to surprise longtime fans with additions rather than revisions. Aspyr layered in new features for a fresh but familiar experience, including classic and modern control options, the addition of boss health bars, and even a photo mode! There are even over 200 trophies, including one for locking Winston in the freezer. Want to learn more about how to take pro shots in photo mode? Art: The original Tomb Raider trilogy was stunning, and Aspyr aimed to upgrade graphics in a way that reflected how fans remembered the games looking. Character models have been updated, 2D sprites have been replaced with 3D models for in-game pickups, there are now baked and real-time lighting effects, and more! You can even swap between the original and modern graphics at any time.
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered includes all expansions.
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered includes the first three adventures plus all expansions originally only released for the PC. You’ll get:
Tomb Raider (1996): In the game that started it all, adventurer Lara Croft has been hired to recover the pieces of an ancient artifact known as the Scion. Run, jump, swim and climb in fearless acrobatic style to find out the truth of its origin and powers, leaving only a trail of empty tombs and ammo in your wake. The original Tomb Raider comes complete with the Unfinished Business expansion, which adds four new bonus levels in two extra chapters.
Tomb Raider II: The award-winning second installment in the Tomb Raider series invites you to join Lara as she travels around the globe to retrieve the legendary Dagger of Xian, said to grant the powers of a fire-breathing dragon to its holder. Tomb Raider II includes the Golden Mask expansion, which adds five new bonus levels in a separate mini-adventure.
Tomb Raider III: In Tomb Raider III, Lara follows the clues to a deadly secret in this complex adventure combining challenging puzzles with high-speed action. Boldly leap chasms and blast monsters in pursuit of a mystery that defies any earthly explanation. The Lost Artifact includes six new levels that continue Lara’s adventures from the original Tomb Raider III.
