Tomb Raider Remastered Lore: The Dagger of Xian
Feb 22, 2024
The Dagger of Xian is an ancient artifact with the power to transform anyone who plunges it into their heart into a dragon. Learn more about this powerful artifact in this lore feature.
Centuries ago in ancient China, a Dragon Emperor took the Dagger of Xian's powers for himself. In his dragon form, the emperor conquered much of China. His conquest was nearly complete until he encountered an army of monks determined to stop him. Amid the battle, a gravely injured monk noticed a dagger shining from the dragon’s belly as it walked over him. Seizing the opportunity, the monk removed the dagger. The dragon killed the wounded monk before succumbing to its own death, the skin melting off his bones and leaving only a skeleton behind.
The surviving monks took the dagger to the Temple of Xian at the Great Wall of China and placed it back into its pedestal. Here it was locked away for centuries to come. They sealed the temple using the Talion, a key concealed deep within the Barkhang Monastery and guarded by namesake warrior monks.
Lara Croft learns of these legends and sets off to the Great Wall of China to investigate if they're true. She discovers that a cult called the Fiamma Nera - more precisely their leader Marco Bartoli - is set on finding the Dagger of Xian and using it for his own twisted purposes. It’s up to her to keep this power out of the wrong hands.
