Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Lore: Dr. Willard and RX TECH
Mar 21, 2024
Dr. Mark Willard is the head molecular biologist employed by the international science company RX TECH. He is an opportunist with little regard for anyone besides himself. While researching meteorite rock in Antarctica, the RX TECH team stumbled upon an incredible discovery: first, a head carved from rock, reminiscent of those on Easter Island, and then, a significantly younger discovery—the grave of an HMS Beagle crew member, Paul Caulfield. RX TECH's mining operations eventually led them to discover the Lost City of Tinnos, believed to have been established by Polynesians as tribute to the power of the meteorite that impacted the area. Inspired by his research on meteorite rock and genetics, Dr. Willard was motivated to establish his own living laboratory of rapid evolution.
To learn more about the meteorite artifacts, read our recent lore feature The Five Meteorite Artifacts.
During his research on the meteorite artifact known as the Infada stone, Dr. Willard encountered Lara Croft in India. Recognizing her potential, he decided to share his knowledge and sent her on a quest to retrieve three other meteorite artifacts, in addition to the one she had already obtained. Lara embarked on her mission while Dr. Willard returned to Antarctica, where the meteorite crater began to affect his employees, mutating them into horrifying creatures. The research base eventually fell into disrepair, with equipment freezing up and non-mutated scientists succumbing to paranoia.
