Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Lore: SLinc and the Damned

Mar 9, 2024

Lara and Sophia in SLinc office

Sophia Leigh Incorporated (SLinc), located in London, UK, is a company established and owned by businesswoman Sophia Leigh. The company's main objective is to pursue enduring beauty at any cost, in this case, through the mystical powers of her meteorite artifact, the Eye of Isis. To learn more about the meteorite artifacts, read our recent feature Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Lore: The Five Meteorite Artifacts

After the ill-fated HMS Beagle expedition, Stephen Barr returned to London, and driven by superstition, parted ways with the Eye of Isis meteorite artifact. The circumstances surrounding how the Eye of Isis ended up in Sophia Leigh's possession remain unclear. What is known is that Sophia seemed to be much older than her outward appearance suggested.

Lara interrogating Sophia's mercenary.

During Lara's quest for the Eye of Isis in London, she traversed the rooftop of St. Paul’s Cathedral, facing a surprise attack from a mercenary hired by Sophia to eliminate anyone who was a threat. After Lara bested him, the mercenary revealed that both his father and grandfather had worked for Sophia, a seemingly impossible connection for a woman who appeared to be only 30 years old.

After Lara forced the mercenary into an early retirement, she stumbled upon a group calling themselves the Damned, led by a man named (Geordie) Bob. Bob shared his story – how he came to London for a promising job at a cosmetics company working as Sophia’s lab assistant.

However, he and other workers found themselves subjected to horrifying experiments; locked in flotation tanks filled with fetid syrup for days. When Bob emerged from the tank, he was covered in rotting flesh. His face was so disfigured that he donned a mask from that point forward.

Bob also revealed that he considered himself cursed with near immortality. He discovered this when he attempted to take his own life but couldn't succeed. Bob, along with other workers who suffered a similar fate, took refuge in the sewers, concealed from public view. Seeing Lara as an opportunity to retaliate against Sophia, Bob decided to assist her.

Sophia used SLinc to conduct experiments on unsuspecting workers, keeping the best results for herself and discarding her unfortunate employees as mere waste. Until her encounter with Lara, she remained oblivious to the existence of the Damned, presuming they were all deceased.
